NSW Schools Constitutional Convention
On Tuesday 5 November 2024, Nate represented the College at the 30th NSW Schools Constitutional Convention, held at New South Wales Parliament House. Delegates heard from Professor Emerita Anne Twomey, of the University of Sydney. During this lecture, students were introduced to contemporary legal challenges, especially concerning freedom of political communication and the extent to which this is reflected and upheld in international human rights law and statute law and interpreted and enforced by the courts. For instance, pertaining to protest laws and relevant police powers, Professor Twomey imparted wisdom on how courts determine whether restrictions on rights are justified and constitutional through a proportionality analysis. To further enhance their understanding of these issues, students then participated in discussions concerning matters such as these.
